Rogers' Actualizing Tendency
Anne Frank once said, "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart," and I think she was right when she said that. I am also a believer that even after all the evil people in this world do, on the inside there is still a good person. Carl Rogers was another believer in this idea.
According to Psychology Tenth Edition in Modules Carl Rogers believed that people are basically good and are endowed with self-actualizing tendencies. Unless thwarted by an environment that inhibits growth. Rogers also theorized that each of us is like an acorn, ready to grow. He believed that a growth required three different conditions.
The first is genuineness. According to Psychology Tenth Edition in Modules genuineness is when people are open with their own feelings, drop their facades, and are transparent and self-disclosing.
The second condition is acceptance. When we accept others we offer unconditional regard, an attitude of grace that values us even knowing our failures.
The third and last condition is empathy. When one is empathetic they share and mirror others feelings and reflect their meanings, according to Psychology Tenth Edition in Modules. Carl Rogers was once quoted in saying, "Rarely do we listen with real understanding, true empathy."
Below I have posted two links. The first is a synopsis of Carl Rogers' theory on actualizing tendency. I really found the second paragraph to be helpful. I thought the comparison to tree growth was very helpful. The second link is similar to the first. It is also a short summary, but the part I find helpful on this certain site lies under the heading "Key Points." I think that the bullets give a good overview on Rogers' ideas on actualizing tendency.
