Constructing an Experiment from a Given Hypothesis and Identify the Independent and Dependent Variables
The hypothesis I chose was dealing with researchers' idea that lack of sleep effects peoples ability to learn and memorize material.
In my experiment I would have three groups with ten people each. The first group would be allowed two hours of sleep. The second would be allowed four hours, and the third group would be allowed a full eight hours. The hours of sleep they were allowed would be the independent variable. Fifteen minutes after waking up I would have each of them play The Memory Game, a game with thirty cards, each with its own matching card. The goal of this game is to find all of the card's matches as quickly as possible. The time which they find all the pairs would be the dependent variable in the experiment. This experiment will identify any correlation between the amount of sleep an individual gets, and their ability to remember information.
Below I have posted links two links. The first is about the effects of sleep deprivation and why sleep is needed. One example in the text that I was not aware of was: "Sleep is needed to regenerate certain parts of the body." The second link is about an experiment done with rats concerning sleep deprivation.
