The Development of Congruence and Incongruence
Congruence and Incongruence are two theories in the world of psychology developed by the humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers. Congruence is when a persons distorted image of themself align the same or closely with reality. Incongruence is the exact opposite. Incongruence simply means that your perception of yourself does not align closely at all with reality. Rogers theorized that congruence and incongruence both have their roots in early child hood.
As aferomentioned Rogers believed that incongruence develops in early childhood. He believed that incongruence develops when parents place a condition on their children's love. For example when parents only give a child gratification for acedmic success. After awhile kids will begin to distort the unsatisfactory memories they have, and that's when incongruence happens.
Congruence can also develop at this time of a persons life. Congruence develops when parents give their children unconditional love as apposed to love just based on gratification. Kids that experience this unconditional love from their parents feel no need to distort memories to feel that people love them.
Below I have posted two links. The first is an article about self concept, but there is three good paragraphs at the bottom of the article about congruence and incongruence that are very helpful in understanding the two aforementioned topics. The second link goes over various things when it comes to incongruence such as incongruence in therapy and communication, but the part I found very useful was the eight paragrpah on incongruence in self, and the diagrams that are next to it.
