Describe the Symptoms and Possible Causes for the Following Disorders: Phobic Disorders, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Somatoform Disorders, Dissociative Disorders, Schizophrenic Disorders, and Mood Disorders.
There are a lot of mental disorders that today's psychologists attempt to cure. I will discuss eight of the biggest disorders and attempt to explain the symptoms of those eight diseases and possible causes.
The first mental disorder I will talk about is Phobic disorders. According to out text book, Psychology Tenth Edition in Modules, a phobia is defined as anxiety disorders that are marked by apersistent, irrational fear and avoidance of a specific object, activity, or situation. Some symptoms you will see in a patient who has a phobia are: An irrational fear of an object, activity or situation, uncontrollable anxiety, or physical reactions to their source of fear such as sweating or sudden loss of breath. Phobias are thought to be caused by a scaring experience as child. For example if someone was bit by a spider as a child they may have an irrational fear of spiders in their adult life.
The second disorder I will discuss is generalized anxiety. People who suffer from generalized anxiety often worry about small or larger concerns. Some symptoms people who suffer from this disorder will show are restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, muscle, trembling, trouble sleeping, sweating, or nausea. The roots of generalized anxiety are believed to come from violent or cruel treatment as a child.
The next disorder I am going to go over is panic disorder. Wikipedia.com defines panic disorder as: A psychiatric disorder in which debilitating anxiety and fear arise frequently and without reasonable cause. A person who suffers from this disorder may show symptoms such as: Sense of impending danger, fear of loss of control, rapid heart rate, sweating, shortness of breath, chills, Chest pain, dizziness, or trouble swallowing. Like most all disorders the patient may no show all these symptoms, but most often they show most of them. Some believed causes of panic disorder are the individuals genetics, an extremely stressful situation, or changes in brain function. An example that first comes to my mind when I hear panic disorder is: Some individuals have an anxiety directed toward large crowds and when they are put in a large crowd it can many times trigger a panic attack.
The fourth disorder I will go over is obsessive-compulsive disorder, or better known as OCD. OCD is an anxiety disorder characterized by unwanted obsessions or compulsions. People who suffer from this diseas often have one thing completely consume there thoughts. This is known as an obsession. Other individuals may be completely fixated on a certain action known as a compulsion. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is thought to be caused by a change in the body's natural chemistry. Another theory is that OCD may come from behavior related habits that you learn over time.
Next I will go over somatoform disorder. According to Web MD Somatoform disorder is defined as: A mental illness that cause bodily symptoms, including pain. The cause of somatoform disorder is still somewhat a mystery. One believed cause is nerce impulses. Some psychologists also believe it to be a hereditary disease. Some symptoms people who have this ailment suffer from symptoms such as: sexual issues, unexplainable pain, and or neurological disorders.
The sixth disorder I was assigned to talk about is: Dissociative disorder. In our text book dissociative disorders are defined as: Disorders in which conscious awareness becomes separated from previous memories, thoughts, and feelings. Some symptoms of dissociative disorders are: Memory loss, depression, anxiety, depersonalization, or derealization. Some believed causes of dissociative disorders are: overwhelmingly stressful situations, major life changes, traumas, and or chemical imbalances.
The next disorder that I will go over is schizophrenic disorder or simply schizophrenia. Wikipedia.com defines schitzophrenic disorder as: A breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation. People who suffer from schitzophernia may experience symptoms such as: Hallucinations, disorganized behavior, loss of interest, loss of motivation, lack of emotions, social withdrawal, difficulty paying attention, memory loss, and or, problems with making sense of information. The cause of schizophrenic disorder is a mixture of genetics, social conditions, and an imbalance of dopamine.
The eight and final disorder I will go over are mood disorders. Dictionary.com defines mood disorders as: psychological disorders characterized by the elevation or lowering of a person's mood, such as depression or bipolar disorder. An individual who suffers from this mental ailment may experience symptoms such as: Major depression, loss of interest, insomnia, lethargy, fatigue, and thoughts of death or suicide. Most psychologists and health professionals believe that the cause of mood disorders come from a chemical imbalance of the brain.
Below I have posted two links. The first is a link to a youtube video. The youtube video was uploaded by The Leap Institute. The video is about a few different people who have the mental disorder schizophrenia. The second link is about a young man who suffers from extreme OCD. I just found it incredible how complicated OCD makes day to day tasks.
